After, returning I found a collection agency dinging my credit report with a ficticious charge on some internet speedway kits that I alledgedly received and signed for while I was deployed. What a hassle! Contact the agency, explain that you were overseas on deployment, and ask where you can mail/fax the documentation for your deployment. Once they have that information, things should get cleared up. Also...wait about 3-6 months and check your credit report to make sure that everything really was fixed.
Send a letter to the collection agency explaining that you were deployed overseas and could not possibly be the same person who signed for that purchase. Tell them they have the wrong party. You could also send any written proof that you were overseas at the time. Demand, do not ask politely, DEMAND that the negative item on your credit report be removed as not belonging to you. Send the same information to any credit bureau on which credit report this derogatory item appears. It would take about 30 days to get it off.





By the way, I have done this with a collection agency regarding a LEGITIMATE negative item they put on my credit report and they promptly took it off.





Do not be shocked that this happened. The collection agency simply buys old debts and then looks around trying to find people from whom to collect. If you check it out, you will find there are probably two dozen people in your state with EXACTLY the same name as you. More than likely, it is one of them who owes the money. Tell the collection agency in no uncertain terms that it is not you. They have no idea who it really is, they are just shopping the debt around until they find someone to stick it to.
