What is the charge for filing a false police report about a stolen vehicle?

I know someone who took their vehicle to Mexico and filed a false police report here in San Diego saying it was stolen. Then they made a statement to their insurance company who did eventually pay off the vehicle. They believe they are in the clear if the vehicle is in Mexico. If this crime is reported how would police investigate when the car is out of their jurisdiction?What is the charge for filing a false police report about a stolen vehicle?
Well I guess they can be done for insurance fraud and wasting police time.What is the charge for filing a false police report about a stolen vehicle?
You have about three or four different charges that can be applied. Filing a false Police report, Grand theft, insurance fraud, and I'm sure the feds can step in with a transporting stolen property out of state. If the insurance company is out of state and the check they issued came from another state, there is also a mail fraud charge there, there may be a few others that i don't even know about.
Normally filing a false police report is a misdemeanor. However, the fraud committed in this case is a felony.
They have police in Mexico, too! In border areas, the police in one country very often have a relationship with those across the border. A curious San Diego detective calls a friendly Tijuana cop . . .
The first guy is actually correct, insurance fraud and taking it across the boarder throws in a few federal statutes, you're looking at a world of trouble and you will get caught - um, I mean...your ';friend.';
